Menu
ASME B1.20 is the American national standard for pipe threads. Its most widely used version, ASME B1.20.1, specifically defines NPT (National Pipe Tapered) threads.
Key Features:
- Thread type: Tapered thread profile that ensures sealing when tightened
- Scope: Covers general-purpose pipe threads such as NPT, NPTR, NPSM, and NPSC
- Thread angle: 60° thread profile with a taper angle of 1°47′24″
- Applications: Commonly used in systems carrying water, gas, steam, and other fluids
- Sealing: NPT threads require PTFE (Teflon) tape or thread sealant; NPTF (Dryseal) threads are designed to seal without additional materials
Purpose and Benefits:
- Defines dimensions, tolerances, and measurement methods for threaded connections
- Provides a design guide for leak-tight and secure joints
- Widely used in threaded fittings such as elbows, tees, and couplings
