What is API 527?
Menu
API 527 is a standard published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) that defines the seat tightness testing procedures for pressure relief valves (PRVs). It determines how much leakage is permissible when the valve is in the closed position and whether that leakage falls within acceptable limits.
Key Features:
- Test scope: Applies to spring-loaded and pilot-operated pressure relief valves
- Test medium: Typically conducted using air or nitrogen
- Leakage criteria: Specifies the maximum allowable leakage rates at defined pressure levels, measured by bubble count or flow volume
- Application areas: Used in refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, and other high-integrity process environments
Purpose and Benefits:
- Ensures quality control by verifying seat tightness after manufacturing
- Plays a critical role in safety assurance and environmental compliance
- Complements API 520 (sizing and installation) and API 526 (dimensional standard), forming a complete framework for PRV selection, installation, and validation
